Early Literacy Initiative Resource Book - 4

The fourth of the five resource books, introduces the readers to various aspects of the theme Teaching and Learning the script. The debate on whether there’s a need to teach the script or will the children just pick these skills up on their own, if exposed to a literate environment has been there for quite some time. However, the some researches have also indicated the need of explicit and systematic approach of teaching the decoding skills, throughout the elementary grades. The topics covered in the theme present the words of experience and perspectives on the development of children as readers and writers of various scripts; also touching upon the developmental patterns, typical challenges faced in the process, the nature of scripts, and strategies used by some of the practitioners in different contexts to build script knowledge by facilitating a meaningful engagement.
